Chapter Nine

Thorn

“Why is it so busy?” Stasha sighed as she grabbed the last tray of blueberry muffins. “We’re going to run out by noon.”

She didn’t wait around for an answer, both she and Jesse doing the best they could to keep up with helping customers while I was focusing on getting more things baked.

It had been nonstop all week long. On Monday, we thought it was a fluke. By Tuesday, we were guessing there was a big event in town we didn’t know about, and we started to make more during the initial bake to compensate for it. Each day, it was busier and busier. I didn’t even have anything for the shelter two of the nights and ended up staying late to make them some muffins so they at least had something.

I slid the muffin pans into the oven and started to work on some no-bake cookies. They were super fast and would at least take up space in the case.

“Boss man,” Riley called from the doorway out front. “Someone’s here to see you.”

I set everything down and went out front and saw a young man standing off to the side with a folder in his hand.

“I’m Thorn,” I introduced myself. “Jesse said you wanted to speak with me?” I wasn’t even sure it was the right person, but I didn’t want to interrupt Jesse as he fulfilled a customer’s order.

“Yes, I’m…Kohen sent me.” He handed me the folder, not meeting my eyes.

In it was a resume and a letter of recommendation from Kohen.

“Come around back, and we can chat.”

His face lit up as I led him into the kitchen.

“This is not the best place to talk about this stuff, but we are busy, and I need to keep working.”

I set the resume on the counter and read it over as I gathered and mixed ingredients. It didn’t take long, pretty much just that he finished high school and worked at a carwash for a short bit. Some basic skills and words like punctual and organized. Nothing baking related. But that was an easy work-around if he was the right fit.

He watched me for a few minutes before offering, “Did you want help?”

Did I? Yes. But would my insurance company flip out if I let him before he was hired? Also yes.

“I wish I could let you, but rules.” I went to the handwashing station and cleaned up. “Do you like baking…I’m sorry. I missed your name?” It was on the resume…I just hadn’t looked at the header.

“I don’t know.” He looked around the kitchen. “My name is Xavier.”

“Nice to meet you, Xavier. Tell me about yourself.”

“I work hard and show up on time and am a quick learner.” He stood up straighter. “And I don’t do drugs. I know you wouldn’t ask that because I don’t think it’s one of those things you are supposed to or whatever, but people tend to think if you’re young and homeless, you are a druggy and I’m not, I’m just hella gay.
